Utne Reader Independent Press Award Nominees Announced
MINNEAPOLIS, MN, (November 1, 2006) -- The 18th annual Utne Reader Independent Press Awards are announced in the November/December issue of Utne Reader, the nation’s leading magazine of new ideas.
Utne Reader celebrates the best of the independent press each issue by reading and reprinting from over 1,200 magazines, newsletters and blogs; 107 of these titles were selected as nominees for the prestigious 2006 Utne Reader Independent Press Awards.
“Economic and political forces make it tempting for publishers to rely on the safe and formulaic,” says Utne Reader’s Editor in Chief David Schimke. “But when our editors sit down in the library every morning, they’re sifting through ever thicker piles of alternative magazines, nonprofit newsletters, and homemade zines that are not only beautifully rendered, but also fearless and thought-provoking. This is the deepest, most essential field of nominees in recent memory.”
Since 1989 these prestigious awards have showcased the best of the independent press in these 15 categories:
- General Excellence – Magazines
- General Excellence – Newsletters
- General Excellence – Zines
The nominees can be viewed online at http://www.utne.com/uipa
The Utne Reader Independent Press Awards recognize the excellence and vitality of alternative and independent publishing. Utne’s editors select nominee publications through their extensive reading process and careful examination, rather than a competition requiring entry forms and fees. In this way, Utne Reader honors the efforts of small, sometimes unnoticed publications that provide innovative, thought-provoking perspectives often ignored or overlooked by mass media. Winners in each category will be announced in the January/February issue of Utne Reader.
