NEW UTNE MAGAZINE LEADERSHIP: PUBLISHER JUDY RUDRUD IS PROMOTED TO PRESIDENT; SENIOR EDITOR KAREN OLSON IS PROMOTED TO EDITOR.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN., -- March 2004 - Utne Magazine, a national progressive lifestyle publication has promoted two staff members to more senior positions.

Judy Rudrud, with a long and impressive career in the publishing industry, has been promoted from Publisher, to President and Publisher. For the last year, Rudrud, a high-energy publishing dynamo has drawn from her rich magazine experience to increase Utne newsstand sales, launch a new direct marketing campaign and lead the magazine through its recent redesign. Her additional title of President puts Rudrud at the helm of all Utne departments including editorial, advertising, circulation, marketing, interactive and production.

Five-year Utne veteran, Senior Editor Karen Olson has been promoted to Editor. A brilliant editor, writer and astute manager, Olson lives the Utne mission. In addition to her journalistic credentials, she has also worked as a wildland firefighter, gardener, and ski guide. A former managing editor of Colorado Review, Olson also helped launch the literary journal Thin Air. Karen's personal essays, short stories, and magazine articles -- primarily focused on environment, health and the arts -- have appeared in numerous publications, including Book, Ode, and Room of One's Own. Karen is also a certified holistic health educator, trained at the National Holistic Institute in Emeryville, California.
