FLAG REDESIGN CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED
(MINNEAPOLIS) — Utne Magazine announces the results of its Flag Redesign Contest in the November/December issue. Over 80 entries were received from across North America with 7 winners chosen. From a graphic designer in Utah to a high school student in California, the winners represent a broad range of American life and geography.
"This contest really seemed to strike deep, emotional chords with our readers," explains Utne Magazine's Assistant Art Director, Jessica Coulter. "The designs expanded the ideas of what a flag should represent. The winners put significant thought into the meaning and symbolism behind their designs."
Utne Magazine's flag redesign contest was born in its July/August issue, which exposed the blandness of most state and provincial flags and offered readers an opportunity to redesign their state flag. The contest took on an especially poignant tone after the events of September 11th. Flag designs and letters expressing opinions about redesigns (both for and against) continue to make their way to the Utne Magazine offices.
The contest winners are as follows:
Under 18 Division
California Josh Roden, Morro Bay (age 15)
Vermont Sarah Healy, Norwich (age 10)
Adult Division
Minnesota Marcel Stratton, Hawley
Utah Jim Hayes, Salt Lake City
Nevada John C. Karp, Jr., Minden
Virginia Jennifer Faison, Richmond
New York Scott Lyon, Albany
