UTNE MAGAZINE’S New Issue Examines Ecological Medicine

(MINNEAPOLIS) — Utne Magazine’s May/June 2001 issue offers a special report on the rise of Ecological Medicine. The issue builds on the public interest created by the Academy Award-winning movie Erin Brockovich and furthered by Bill Moyers’ recent acclaimed PBS special on the chemical industry. The May/June issue arrives on newsstands nationwide today.

"Ecological medicine is an exciting new citizens’ movement led by scientists, health care professionals, and activists with a vision of how to keep people healthy," said Jay Walljasper, Utne Magazine’s editor. Magazines of this issue will meet public health crusaders like Kenny Ausubel, Carolyn Raffensperger and Sandra Steingraber.

• Founder of the Bioneers Conference and author Kenny Ausubel explores a movement among certain doctors, biologists and others to create a new philosophy of health care based on a simple principle: We’ll improve our own health if we improve the health of the world in which we live. "By restoring the earth, we restore ourselves," he says.
• Carolyn Raffensperger, archeologist turned lawyer turned environmental activist, is on a quest to make prevention an international cause. "Prevention is ecological medicine," she says. "Do you want to cure your daughter’s breast cancer, or do you want to prevent it?"
• Biologist Sandra Steingraber, a cancer survivor and nursing mother, grapples with the fact that breast milk contains dangerous chemicals. "A woman’s body is the first environment," says Steingraber. "If alternatives to PVC and other carcinogens exist, we have a moral obligation to use them."
