UTNE MAGAZINE WINS OVERALL EXCELLENCE AWARD — AGAIN

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Utne Magazine won the gold award for Overall Excellence (general interest magazines, over 50,000 circulation) from the Minnesota Magazine & Publications Association (MMPA) at its annual awards event on November 6.

It was the third year in a row that Utne Magazine received the top honor. The magazine also received a gold for Best Feature Article, for "The 20th Century: What's Worth Saving?" (the cover story for the May/June, 1999 issue), and a silver for Best Overall Design.

"As a leader of the publishing industry in Minnesota, Utne Magazine elevates the level of professionalism and technical standards in the industry," said Martha Barnes, MMPA executive director. The judges also cited the magazine's "exciting, intelligent graphics," "clear pagination and layout," and ability to "directly target its educated, forward-thinking readers."

Founded in 1997, the MMPA Awards competition was established to recognize and foster outstanding publishing achievements. As one of the nation's largest regional magazine competitions, this year's event attracted 588 entries in 136 categories.
