Lab Rats for Rumsfeld
By Heather Wokusch, The Progressives' Handbook
Crowd control is going high-tech, and that's cause for concern for Heather Wokusch, author of The Progressives' Handbook, excerpted in Freezerbox Magazine. The US Air Force has suggested the use of 'nonlethal weaponry' against citizens, including high-tech heat-beam and electric-shock weapons. It may seem like wild conspiracy speculation, but Wokusch points out that, according to United States Code, these weapons may be used for '(a)ny law enforcement purpose, including any purpose related to riot control.' -- Bennett Gordon

Chasing Zero
By Ben Jervey, GOOD Magazine
At the core of the concrete jungle called New York City beats a heart of green, according to Ben Jervey. His impassioned defense of the city's green credentials includes touting the local food sources, renewable energy options, and even the environmentally friendly beer. Accompanied by amusing illustrations by Peter Arkle, Jervey is able to paint the predominantly gray island of Manhattan in a greener hue. -- Bennett Gordon

Drugging Our Waters
By Elizabeth Royte, OnEarth
Retirement communities in Western Connecticut have a dirty habit of flushing their excess drugs literally down the toilet. According to OnEarth, '[h]ospitals and nursing homes routinely dump unused or expired pills down the toilet, and consumers have been advised to do the same.' In a country that fills more than 3 billion prescriptions each year, it comes as no surprise that water in the United States is laden with drugs. The US Geological Survey has identified 82 different organic contaminants, including antidepressants and synthetic hormones, floating in our waterways. Scientists are hard at work, figuring out the ecological effects of so many trace chemicals, but testing the myriad combinations of drugs remains a daunting task. -- Bennett Gordon
